The 1th instalment of the The Good Soldier Schweik shows the effect which the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand d'Este has on Schweik. He confides his impressions to a plain-clothes man and is arrested, just as publican Palivec. The latter is sentenced to 10 years in prison for his seditious words while Schweik is sent to a psychiatric ward first and released subsequently.
