The first episode of Trnka's film based on a humorous novel by Jaroslav Hasek "The Adventures of Good Soldier Svejk" from World War I. In this story from a small station on the way from Hatvan to Halic we learn how Svejk cheats lieutenant Dub. Lieutenant Dub thinks he has caught Svejk drinking alcohol, which was prohibited. Svejk, not turning a hair, claimed that the cognac in a bottle is actually ferrous water and he confuses the lieutenant so much that in the end he even volunteers to drink dung-water.
